What Is the Best Way to Get Your Vitamin D

Vitamin D

As many of you know, vitamin D is an essential mineral to our health. Without plenty of vitamin D, our bones can feel the effects. Vitamin D promotes bone growth, and also allows us to absorb calcium. People that become vitamin D deficient run the risk of having soft bones or attaining skeletal deformities. So, how do we get sufficient amounts of vitamin D?

There are two main ways of getting vitamin D. The most often and most natural way, is through direct sunlight. The Sun provides our skin with lots and lots of it, too. So, for those of you who like to hideout inside or hunker-down in the shade, you may not be getting enough of it. Of course, too much Sun can lead to other skin problems as well, so how else can we get vitamin D to make up for insufficient Sunlight? Well, the second most common way is through supplements. You can buy vitamin D-3 in pill form from pretty much any health store, and even at grocery stores.

Although, one thing to keep in mind is that studies have shown that supplements do not provide quite as potent of a dose as the Sun delivers. A study exposed, through mice with bone homeostasis between direct Sunlight and vitamin D-3 supplements, showed a more progressive bone restoration to the mice receiving Sunlight. That doesn’t mean that you should just sit and bake in the Sun either though. Try giving yourself a “normal” amount of Sunlight, and if your Dr. wants you to get more vitamin D, you can go through whatever means they suggest for getting it. Whether it be with vitamin tablets or through more Sunlight, their suggestion will be best for your specific scenario.

I hope this information helps for those of you that are/were confused about vitamin D, where it comes from, and what the best way of attaining it actually is.
