Health Benefits: Essential Oils

Essential oils are all over the internet these days, but what’s the big hype? Well let me tell ya!

Due to the fact that essential oils lack fatty acids they aren’t considered oils. Now that I’ve really confused you let me break it down – essential oils are distilled from plants to produce highly concentrated plant components. It takes a large amount of the particular plant to fill a small bottle. Just to give you an idea of how much: to make 1lb of Bulgarian Rose oil it takes over 4,000 lbs of Bulgarian Roses. This is a factor as to why some essential oils are very costly!

ts are We all know about the everyday power of scent: how a particular perfume reminds you of your mother, or when the smell of your favourite restaurant brings you back to your first date there. But did you know that some scents can actually improve your health? Essential oils can also help you relax or sleep, or improve your skin or digestion — their benefits go well beyond a pleasant smell.

There are some general tips for using essential oils that apply regardless of the type. Never apply most oils directly to your skin, as their high concentration can cause a reaction or irritation. Instead, essential oils should be diluted with water or a carrier oil like jojoba or almond. And with a few exceptions, as noted below, do not ingest essential oils. And always talk to your doctor about health concerns, especially if they represent sudden changes in your well-being.

Uses

There are numerous uses for these oils – beauty, household, medicinal, and more!

  • Repel Insects!
    • Indoor or outdoors certain scents can be used to fend off pesky mosquitos, fruit flies, moths, and regular flies!
  • Bye Bye Incense & Candles
    • Diffusing oils are a safer alternative to burning candles or incense, especially if you have kids or animals running around your house. Go ahead turn them on & fall asleep to a relaxing scent. No worries of wax spills, burns, or other accidents that can happen.
  • Feeling A Little Stuffy?
    • They help in reducing inflammation, congestion, and ease the suffering from allergies or other breathing disorders.
  • Super-charge Those Brain Cells!
  • Stressful Day?
    • One of the most popular uses for essential oils is to help unwind from a long day! You can diffuse a soothing blend of essential oils or rub them straight on to your body (make sure to dilute with a carrier oil). You can diffuse anywhere – keep one in your office, on your nightstand, and in any room of the house.
      • TIP: Diffusing them is the easiest and longest lasting method.
  • Ward Of Ilnesses
    • A copious amount of essential oils are anti-microbial and when you diffuse them into the air the organic compounds within the oils will come into direct contact with any airborne pathogens and stop them in their path. Depending on which diffuser you own, yours may also work as a humidifier. In this case – airwayas are kept moist & healthy so you are less susceptible to any pathogen that might make it into your body.
    • Essential oils are immune boosters!

6. Improve Cognitive Function

Using essential oils in a diffuser is a highly-effective way to super-charge your brain cells. Again, this effect works on multiple levels. First, many essential oils have adaptogenic qualities – meaning that they are soothing when you’re stressed, but they can also give you a pick-me-up when you’re feeling down or sluggish. By leveling out your mood, the oils in the air will help you to focus. Also, there are several essential oils which are known for their powerful ability to balance the body’s hormones. With regular use, these oils can actually help to heal the underlying causes responsible for hampering cognitive function.
